Interdisciplinary perspectives in stemmatology and phylogenetics

In recent years, stemmatology has undergone important evolutions, both at the theoretical level, with the debates on philological methods in critical edition (Neo-Lachmanism, Neo-Bedierism, New Philology, Scribal Genealogy), and at the methodological level, with the use of computational tools for stemma reconstruction. The 2024 COMPAS conference aims to bring together scholars and researchers at the intersection of stemmatology and phylogenetics, to foster exchange of ideas and methodologies to advance our understanding of the evolution of textual traditions.

The conference will feature presentations on research in both stemmatology and phylogenetics, highlighting innovative approaches and methodologies for reconstructing evolutionary histories. Topics will encompass the application of computational tools and statistical models to unravel the complex networks of relationships found in both textual and biological data.

Call For Paper

Abstract submission deadline: 1st of June 2024

Paper submission deadline: 20th of June 2024

We welcome contributions on the application of phylogenetics to stemmatology, such as (but not limited to):

  • Methodological innovations: Papers that showcase novel approaches and advancements in computational methods, statistical models, and analytical tools for reconstructing stemmas and evolution lineage.
  • Results on textual traditions : Papers regarding the reconstruction of the stemma of existing textual traditions and the new knowledge that stemmatology brings to the understanding of scribal behavior and textual transmission.
  • Benchmarking and evaluation: Papers and benchmarking results regarding the performance of phylogenetic and computational stemmatology algorithms on known traditions, especially in complicated settings such as horizontal transmission.
  • Comparison with manual approaches: Papers that discuss the implications of using computational approaches to build stemmatology trees and comparison to the standard textual criticism approaches.

Papers should not exceed 20 pages (single column). Each presenter will be given a 30 minutes time-slot for presentation. Short papers (< 3 pages) describing work in progress can also be submitted, but will not be included in full proceedings. Selected papers will be published in appropriate venue (stay tuned !)

Submissions should be done through the EasyChair submission platform:
